The History Of Web Design In A Nutshell
By Palak
There has been a huge controversy regarding the health risks that mobile phones pose to humans through their usage. Innumerable studies have been conducted in order to find out whether such a problem actually exist or it is just rumours? However the studies have not been able to provide a clear picture of the existing controversy.

Mobile phones emit radiations that according to some scientists is hazardous to health and might cause brain tumour and other related ailments. But there is no solid evidence to evaluate the risks among long-term, heavy users and for potentially long induction periods. It is commonly seen as a result of many studies that it may take at least 10 years of exposure before researchers are able to detect any significant increase in related concerns.

So, after scrutinizing the entire situation, it is advisable to follow

some safety tips to help reduce your microwave exposure:

- use an ear piece or Bluetooth as it will help directing the microwave exposure away from your head where the vulnerable areas of the brains have been shown to have the risk factors

- try to avoid giving kids cell phones as much as possible

- always receive a call from the left ear, because if you use the right one, it may affect brain directly.

However, these days mobile phones are created with highly advanced technology using the best materials and components. No brand can sustain in the market if its products are not safe and secure for the consumers

Ironically, and to our benefit, not all studies have shown negative results. So, at the end of the day, until this controversy settles down, it is advisable to be a little cautious while using your phones to be on the safer side as no one can do without them.

Retail Study From 2009 Holidays: Mobile Shopping Leaves Much to Be Desired

Image © Keynote Competitive Research

New measurements were published on Jan. 28, 2010 from the nation's first in-depth study of the performance of leading mobile Web sites during the 2009 holiday shopping season.

The results left much to be desired.

Keynote Competitive Research, which is the industry analysis group of Keynote Systems, measured the performance of 10 retail mobile Web sites during the busy holiday weeks of Nov. 18, 2009 to Jan. 4, 2010.

The 10 sites were Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Costco, Dell, Foot Locker, Musician's Friend, Sears, Target and Wal-Mart.

The study measured the download performance for three pages on each site: loading the mobile site's home page, searching for a product and retrieving information about a specific product.

Measurements for the Keynote study were taken from New York and San Francisco using data connections on the AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless cell phone networks.

Average load times for mobile home pages ranged from 8.3 seconds in the best case with Best Buy to 34.4 seconds in the worst case. Search results ranged from 4.5 seconds for Wal-Mart to 37.9 seconds. Product information ranged from 5.7 seconds with Foot Locker to 26.8 seconds.

"Wired Web [users] are used to much ... faster times and often expect pages to load in two seconds or less," said Ben Rushlo, senior manager of Web technologies at Keynote, in a statement.

He added: "Even the best mobile Web sites take two to three times as long as that despite being optimized heavily for ... mobile [phones]. The worst sites are taking [more than] half a minute on average to load each page."

The study also showed that mobile sites have much higher error rates than non-mobile sites. The overall range of availability was between 97.6 percent for Foot Locker to just 74.7 percent. Keynote says that consumers on the wired Web expect 99.5 percent or better availability.

As such, even the very best mobile Web sites are not fully meeting consumer expectations. Only two mobile Web sites in the study achieved an overall availability better than 90 percent and three Web sites were below 80 percent overall. Price War: All-Unlimited Plan at AT&T, Verizon Wireless Costs $120; With a Catch, Cellular South Costs $79.99

Image © Cellular South

While AT&T and Verizon Wireless recently lowered the price of their unlimited plans to $69.98 and $69.99 per month respectively, that's just for voice minutes.

What about text messaging and data? Once you add in unlimited texting and data, the new unlimited AT&T and Verizon Wireless plans jump up to $119.98 and $119.99 respectively.

Image © Cellular South

Instead, how does $79.99 sound for unlimited talk, data and texting? Though perhaps you've never heard of the company, Cellular South hopes its offering sounds mighty attractive.

Cellular South announced last fall this nationwide Smartphone Unlimited Plan for individuals and families with smartphones. You can even add a second line for only $39.99 more.

Combined, that means you could get two fully unlimited lines with Cellular South for the same price as one line with AT&T or Verizon Wireless.

But what's the catch? There's a big one. While its primary talk plans require a two-year contract just like the main plans at AT&T and Verizon Wireless do, Cellular South is only a regional carrier. The carrier's major issue is its very limited coverage.

Customers participating in Cellular South plans must reside in select southern U.S. cities. If you don't (i.e. if you live in Chicago, San Diego or New York City), you can't use the service.

Specifically, Cellular South customers must live in Mississippi; generally in and surrounding Memphis; Arkansas; west Tennessee; Mobile and Baldwin counties in Alabama; or Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa and Walton counties in Florida.

If you're in one of these areas, you can then call nationwide. The carrier has a 50/50 rule that says at least half of your calls must originate from one of these areas. If you travel outside of such an area, your roaming is covered so long as it's for less than half of your usage.

Along with a few others, Cellular South does offer one of the industry's heavy-hitting smartphones: Google's Android-powered HTC Hero.

Other companies (and especially prepaid wireless carriers) offer lower-priced alternatives to the unlimited plans at AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile with better nationwide coverage. The carrier says low-use customers can maintain cell phone service for as low as $3 a month by refilling with $10 cards.

While many Page Plus users subscribe to the carrier's pay-as-you-go pricing, the company also has monthly prepaid plans with voice, texting and data bundled together.

Page Plus in Oct. 2009 launched its Talk n Text 1200 plan with 1,200 voice minutes, 1,200 text or picture messages and 50 megabytes of data for $29.95 a month. Price War: Following Changes at Verizon Wireless, AT&T, U.S. Cellular Offers Unlimited Calling Plans

Image © U.S. Cellular

This week, competition is doing exactly what it's designed to do: lower the price for consumers while giving you more options.

With new pricing going live this Monday at Verizon Wireless and AT&T for unlimited cell phone plans, national wireless carrier U.S. Cellular is making changes, too.

Beginning today, U.S. Cellular has a new unlimited national individual plan for new and current users. It's $69.99 a month for unlimited voice calls. This matches the new pricing at Verizon Wireless for its unlimited individual voice plan.

U.S. Cellular is also now offering an unlimited national family plan with two lines for $119.99 per month. With this plan, customers can get up to three additional lines for $49.99 each. The carrier's new family offering also exactly matches the updated share plan at Verizon Wireless.

These new U.S. Cellular plans, though, don't take into account data usage. Also, the plans only offer incoming text and picture messaging for free.

With U.S. Cellular, an unlimited messaging plan costs $19.95 per month for individuals or $29.95 per account for up to five lines on a family plan.

U.S. Cellular charges $24.95 per month for unlimited messaging and data on its individual national plans and $49.95 per month per account for family plans on up to five lines. These plans are not available for "premium or smartphones".

Chicago-based U.S. Cellular is the nation's fifth-largest full-service wireless carrier. It serves 6.2 million customers across the country. Verizon Wireless has about 89 million customers while AT&T has about 82 million wireless customers.
Price War: Following Changes at Verizon Wireless, AT&T, U.S. Cellular Offers Unlimited Calling Plans originally appeared on About.com Cell Phones on Tuesday, January 19th, 2010 at 17:49:11.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

Price War: Verizon Wireless Cuts Pricing for Unlimited Talk, Text Plans; AT&T Cuts, Too

Image © Verizon Wireless

While AT&T continues to receive service complaints from iPhone users, Verizon Wireless on Monday upped the ante in its price war by debuting reduced pricing on its unlimited voice and text plans.

Beginning today, the carrier's Nationwide Unlimited Talk plan is $69.99 per month to call anyone in the U.S. Its new Nationwide Unlimited Talk & Text adds unlimited texting for $89.99.

Prior to this change, Verizon Wireless used to charge $99.99 for unlimited talk only. That plan now costs $30 less. The unlimited talk and text plan used to cost $119.99. It now costs $30 less.

For $5 more per month, a prepaid wireless version of the talk plan costs $74.99 instead of $69.99 for the contract plan. The no-contract version of its talk and text plan is $94.99 instead of $89.99.

While the carrier is continuing to offer its lower-priced, minute-based plans at the same prices, Verizon Wireless is also lowering the price of its share plans for families.

Its Nationwide Unlimited Talk Family SharePlan is now $119.99 per month with two lines. Its Nationwide Unlimited Talk & Text Family SharePlan is now $149.99 per month with two lines. Each additional line (up to three) costs $49.99 extra.

Image © AT&T

Verizon Wireless is also making a $9.99-per-month data plan with 25 megabytes mandatory for its high-speed 3G customers. Consumers should be careful about monitoring these 25 megabytes because excess usage could be costly. A previous data plan for $19.99 a month will now be discontinued.

The design of the changes is to capture market share from rivals of Verizon Wireless. The carrier also wants to convince customers to spend more money on higher-priced unlimited plans and to use data, Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam said on a Jan. 15, 2010 conference call.

For the purposes of simplification and to reduce the demands on the carrier's service staff, McAdam also said that Verizon Wireless is immediately reducing the number of mobile phones offered to 50 from 80 handsets.

To fight back, AT&T on Monday debuted dollar-for-dollar changes. AT&T has cut the price of its unlimited voice and data plan for smartphones (like the iPhone) from $129.99 to $99.99 per month. That's a $30 savings.

Verizon Wireless currently has about 89 million customers while AT&T has approximately 82 million wireless customers.

Update on Jan. 19, 2010: U.S. Cellular also just announced new unlimited national plans.
Price War: Verizon Wireless Cuts Pricing for Unlimited Talk, Text Plans; AT&T Cuts, Too originally appeared on About.com Cell Phones on Monday, January 18th, 2010 at 03:23:29.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

Study: Consumers Want More Support Automation, Proactive Notifications

Image © Forrester

In today's cost-cutting world, automation is becoming commonplace. Especially for the purposes of customer support, though, we sometimes just need a human.

But despite common thought that consumers often prefer live agent interactions, a new study released on Wednesday reveals that consumers preferred automated telephone customer service systems in five out of 10 posed scenarios for straightforward interactions.

The study, which was commissioned by Nuance Communications and conducted by Forrester Research on behalf of Nuance, revealed that 61 percent of people would rather check the status of a flight from their cell phone versus 49 percent wanting to speak with a live agent.

It was also revealed that "consumers who frequently contact customer service from a wireless phone are relatively more amenable to automated telephone customer service channels," according to the study.

The study said that 32 percent of people regularly use a cell phone to contact customer service. Users who call customer service from a cell phone rated automated telephone support systems higher than the consumers who don't regularly contact support representatives from a cell phone.

Forrester says this is important due to its expectation that the number of wireless-only households will continue to grow and will reach 19 percent of all U.S. households by 2013.

As part of the study, surveyed consumers also voted on their desire to receive proactive notifications. Most interested in doing so for the travel industry, the results show that a "strong majority" of consumers want at least one proactive notification alert via their choice of text message, voice message or email.

More cell phone and smartphone studies can be found here.
Study: Consumers Want More Support Automation, Proactive Notifications originally appeared on About.com Cell Phones on Thursday, January 14th, 2010 at 00:01:39.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

Report: Half of Consumers Used Mobile Phones for 2009 In-Store Holiday Shopping

Image © Motorola

With many reports discussing overall holiday sales, Motorola on Monday released a specific holiday report about how consumers used their mobile phones while shopping in stores.

The annual research study of holiday shoppers said "the usage and impact of mobile shopping technologies exploded during the 2009 holiday shopping season," according to Motorola.

The report said 51 percent of consumers in 11 countries (including the U.S., India and China) used mobile phones for in-store activities such as comparison shopping and seeking peer feedback, product information and coupons.

More specifically, Motorola said that 64 percent of Gen-Y shoppers (age 18 to 34) used their mobile phones for in-store shopping-related activities during the holiday season.

Being that seven in 10 surveyed holiday shoppers reported flat or declining budgets last year, a quality customer experience grew all the more critical. Mobile technologies helped seal the deal.

More than half of surveyed shoppers reported a better experience due to the use of mobile technologies from in-store salespeople (i.e. two-way radios and handheld mobile computers).

Some 4,530 shoppers (age 18 to 65) completed the independent research study from Nov. 25, 2009 to Dec. 20, 2009 through research partners e-Rewards and TNS Research International. Report: Led by Wireless Handset Segment, Strong 2010 Expected for Consumer Electronics Industry

Consumer Electronics Association
Image © CEA

As the economy warms up, it's predicted that the consumer electronics industry will generate more than $165 billion in U.S. shipment revenues in 2010, according to the semi-annual forecast released on Jan. 7, 2009 by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

The $165 billion figure would be a a slight increase from 2009. The CEA says the consumer electronics industry will see positive revenue growth in 2010 after a revenue decline in 2009.

The CEA says the wireless handset category is expected to have a strong 2010 and will be the primary revenue driver for the consumer electronics industry this year.

Within the mobile handset industry, the report says smartphones continue to lead the way. The CEA says smartphones will generate nearly $17 billion in shipment revenue and more than 52 million unit sales in 2010.

"Smartphones ... are primed for strong growth as consumers continue to seek efficient, portable devices," said CEA director of industry analysis Steve Koenig. "With more consumers seeking content anywhere [and at any time], the demand for products facilitating these experiences will drive purchases going forward."

Though cell phones will still outweigh smartphones this year, the report says smartphones will comprise more than 30 percent of total wireless phone shipments in 2010 with that percentage increasing in the years ahead.

More cell phone and smartphone studies can be found here.
Report: Led by Wireless Handset Segment, Strong 2010 Expected for Consumer Electronics Industry originally appeared on About.com Cell Phones on Monday, January 11th, 2010 at 15:24:00.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

Here are some of the hot wireless items to watch for following CES.

Washable Cell Phone: Cell phones can be a breeding ground for bacteria, but their worst enemy is likely being dropped in water. The Seal Cell from Seal Shield is said to be the world's first waterproof, dishwasher-safe and antimicrobial cell phone.

The first few models plan to be released for T-Mobile. Prices for the phones aren't yet public.

ZOMM wireless leash
Image © ZOMM

Cell Phone Leash: If you've ever lost your cell phone, you know how frustrating, time consuming and expensive it is to start all over with a new one. ZOMM is being called the first "wireless leash" for mobile phones.

It goes on your keychain and acts as your cell phone's guardian angel so you don't lose it.

The ZOMM device needs to be in close proximity with your cell phone. If it gets too far away, it will sense the distance and alert you with a loud alarm. The item costs $80.

Cell Phone Watch: The W Phonewatch from Kempler & Strauss is said to be the world's smallest full-function GSM cell phone watch. Google’s Nexus One ‘Superphone’ Now on Sale at T-Mobile for $179, Coming to Verizon Wireless This Spring

Google's Nexus One
Image © Google

Google says the Nexus One from HTC, which is the next device based on Google's Android 2.1 operating system, can't even be contained in the word "smartphone". The company says it's a "superphone".

No matter which word you call it, T-Mobile customers on Tuesday now have the chance to buy it for $179 with a two-year contract.

One of the first features you should notice is its speed. Its 1-gigahertz processor from Qualcomm means you should see better multitasking, Google's Eric Tseng told reporters on Tuesday at its Mountain View, Calif. headquarters.

Google employees were the first to get their hands on it three weeks ago. The new device has been eagerly anticipated ever since.

While the iPhone 3G S is generally known as a swift phone in terms of its processing power, software slowdowns have been widely experienced on the popular Palm Pre for Sprint.

Google's Nexus One
Image © Google

Processor speed is an increasingly important element of a smartphone as its users demand more functionality from the full-featured devices.

The Nexus One also has a 5-megapixel camera with an LED flash, a 3.7-inch display and it's only 11.5 millimeters thick. That equates to 0.45 of an inch, which nears even the thinnest handset on our slim cell phone list. It's a bit thinner than the iPhone 3G S, which is 0.48 of an inch thick.

Surprisingly, the Nexus One only comes with a 4-gigabyte microSD card, but it's expandable to 32 gigabytes. It also has a light sensor, accelerometer (i.e. so the screen flips with you when you rotate it) and proximity sensor.

If you're interested in the Nexus One but you're not at T-Mobile, you have two other options. It's available now in unlocked form for a pricey $529. This means it's not tied to a certain carrier and can be used where you have service.

Google also says the Nexus One will be available this spring at a discounted price with a Verizon Wireless contract. Engadget published the first official review of the Nexus One on Jan. 2, 2009, which says the Nexus One "is not very different than the Motorola DROID in any substantial way".
Google’s Nexus One ‘Superphone’ Now on Sale at T-Mobile for $179, Coming to Verizon Wireless This Spring originally appeared on About.com Cell Phones on Tuesday, January 5th, 2010 at 16:31:26.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

Early Termination Fees: 4 Steps for Spotting, Avoiding Costly Fines

Here are four new steps for spotting and avoiding costly fees from Consumer Action, which is a non-profit, membership-based consumer education and advocacy organization.

Determine if you're in the ETF "penalty box". Many of us don't know if we'll be hit with an ETF if we switch. Call your carrier and ask. If you've had your plan for two years or more, though, you can safely assume that you're no longer in the ETF penalty box.

Do the math on your cell phone penalty. If you're paying $90 a month now and switch to a cheaper cell phone service (such as a prepaid wireless plan for $45), you can "pay off" a $150 penalty in just three months. Thereafter, you would be saving $45 a month as compared to your current plan.

If you're out of the ETF penalty phase and want to stay out, don't be lured back in. As your ETF penalty box draws to a close, don't be surprised if your cell phone carrier tries to get you back in through the allure of a new phone or more minutes.

If you want to switch, watch for your carrier changing the terms of your contract. Major changes by a carrier to your contract terms can sometimes be used as the basis for escaping an ETF. If you want to switch and avoid an ETF, be on high alert for bill inserts, emails and phone calls that change your terms and ask for your approval.

The ETF at AT&T is currently $175 per phone line. It's $200 at Sprint and T-Mobile per line. Finally, the ETF is prorated at Verizon Wireless so it drops $5 per month and it's either $175 or $350 depending on your style of phone.
